Resogun is a dual stick shoot 'em up game for the Playstation 4. This exclusive launch game was developed by Housemarque, it is the spiritual successor of Super Stardust HD and Super Stardust Delta.

"It's fucking dope... Get on that!" -Dan Derby

Firstly, let me start off by saying that if you haven't played this game, you absolutely should. It will no doubt be remembered as part of the essential launch experience for PS4 buyers.

Secondly, get your buddies to play, if they aren't playing already. The game is free with Playstation Plus, so they have no excuse not to try it. If you don't have any friends, sell your Playstation, go outside, and get a life.

Playing with Friends

Resogun isn't half as fun as it is with friends. Let me explain... When you login to play, the level select screen shows you its leaderboard. Tap triangle to filter to show just your friend's high scores. This focus on high scores was by design. It reminds me of Zuma's Revenge, when I would login each day, and check which levels my friends had bested me on, thus challenging me to beat their newest high scores. Razzing your friends, and bragging about your highest high scores is primal, and universally fun no matter what kind of gamer you are.

Deceptively Deep

"The coolest thing about the game is that there are no tutorials... You have to keep playing until you figure it out" -Chad Siliveria

Adding to the experience is the fact that the more you play, the more you learn, and the higher your scores become. Quick reflexes may allow you to beat a level flawlessly, but you could still end up with a shitty score. This is because the game's strategy is much deeper than the initial, simple impressive you are given.

You'll toggle the left thumbstick when you start your first game, "So that's how I move", then you'll toggle the right thumbsick, "So that's how I shoot". And that's all you need to beat the game. However, to master it, you've got to learn to save humans, use bombs, boost and overdrive, not to mention master the multiplier.

"Use the boost to get through!" - Peppy

Without spoiling all the mechanics of the game, I'll explain one of my favourite features, the boost. You can use boost to quickly travel around the level and save humans, and to smash through groups of enemy ships. When you come out of the boost, a small explosion spreads all out around you.

Simply enough right? As you play, you'll realize the use of the boost is actually more complicated than that. Depending on the ship you pilot, you will have a different amount of boost. Also, as you boost, it will deplete faster in open spaces between enemies, and as you smash through enemies, the game slows down, and the mobility of the ship increases. The size of the explosion at the end of the boost is larger when you destroy more enemies.

There is actually a trophy for making it to the boss using only the boost. At first this sounds absurdly difficult, but as you practice it, you start to realize the genius in this maneuver, and you become a better player for having earned the trophy. Admittedly, the boost is one of the more complex aspects of the game, but all of the mechanics come together beautifully to create a very deep, rich experience.
