Captain America: The Winter Soldier starts strong!, putting Cap in an ideal situation to show off how bad ass and effective he can be against actual Earth folk. Which if you think about it, we haven't really seen much of. In 'The Avengers', Cap kinda took a back seat against a cosmic threat, so this is refreshing to see modern day Cap absolutely rape a band of pirates who decided they were going to hold S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents hostage?. (Sounds like a good idea? right?...but there's more to that story) Which reminds me! There is an absolutely hilarious amount of Cap murdering people in this movie!!
But I digress... Throughout the movie, the action stays, for the most part, very "real world"… Spec Ops, car chases, lots of melee combat and gunfights, which usually I think gets kind of boring, but in this movie, I felt they kept things interesting enough to keep me entertained
The plot was complex enough without being too heavy handed or preachy. Without getting into too much detail, It’s essentially a classic “trust no oneâ€, government conspiracy thriller, with cooler outfits. Which in effect, is not as fun as some of the other Marvel movies but defiantly the most mature that we've seen
For a movie called 'The Winter Soldier' There's not really a lot of 'Winter Soldier' in it! And he's certainly not very important to the plot. His back story (not just his relationship with Steve Rogers) is interesting enough to get much more attention, but they kind of just kept him around as someone to beat up on Cap… Which is fine… It makes for some of the better melee we’ve seen in these Marvel movies. But, a bit of a personal let down. We do get some fanfare, a couple nods for the book readers, and a bit of a payoff at the end. Maybe there will be more in Cap 3.
The more compelling acting is coming from Robert Redford. Without him (and, I mean same exact character with a different actor) the movie would have suffered a great deal. Chris Evens, Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders, and the rest of the supporting cast are essentially there to look beautiful and rape noobs. Although, I’ll admit, Chris Evens does a great job as Cap. Falcon was comparable to War Machine… actually…. He was exactly War Machine.
A couple rapid fire points…
1. Everything Cap does with his shield is boner inducing
2. Heli-Carriers. are. Sick.
3. Classic Mortal Kombat camera angle fight scenes win
4. Don’t get kicked by Captain America
5. Chad will never look like Chris Evens
These movies have managed, for me at least, to stand alone as far as review scores go. This isn't Moneyball, Wolf of Wall Street, or Life of Pi! I don't need or want to compare these with anything outside of other Marvel Universe movies. Which, it is certainly one of the best and I liked it quite a bit.
It’s 3.5 bumped up to a 4 for pushing marvel forward and not being Thor 2, or Cap 1… or Ironman 3… or Incredible Hulk… yuk. Go see it!
For more candid thoughts, including the effects this movie will have on Avengers 2, and of course… the SPOILERS!!! (I have so much more to say!!) Check out our next episode of The All Range Mode Podcast
